The effects of temperature on breakdown of electric cables have been studied extensively till date to gain a perspective on the thermal rating of power cable systems. With increasing ampacity of cables worldwide, thermal instability induced breakdown is gaining renewed interest. The authors have planned rigorous experiments on the mechanism of breakdown in cables. The experimental investigations on thermal breakdown of unloaded cables are presented here. The results are compared with theoretical estimations.en_US
